An AI food estimate is a draft. Review the foods, ingredients, preparation, and portions before adding it to your diary.
What a photo can help you do
In Calorify, you can photograph a meal or describe it to request an estimate of calories, protein, carbohydrate, and fat. You can review and adjust the result before it becomes part of your diary. This can give you a starting point when entering every ingredient would be inconvenient.
The useful question is not whether the picture looks convincing. It is whether the suggested entry matches what you know about your meal. You have context that an image may not contain: how the meal was prepared, which sauce you used, and whether the plate includes a second helping.
Take a photo that shows the meal clearly
Place the entire meal in view, use adequate light, and avoid covering important components with your hand or utensils. If part of the meal is outside the frame, mention it in your description. A drink beside the plate or a dressing added afterward still needs to be accounted for.
A clearer photo can make the input easier to interpret, but it does not establish exact portion weights or guarantee an accurate result. When you know an amount from a package or scale, include it and check that the returned estimate uses it.
Add details the image cannot establish
Compare “a bowl of pasta” with “cooked pasta with tomato sauce, cheese added on top, and olive oil used in cooking.” The second description supplies preparation details that may not be visible. If you know the quantities, provide those too rather than asking the image to infer them.
You do not need to write a recipe for every meal. Focus on details likely to change the entry: added oils, sauces, fillings, the type of milk, and whether a food was fried, baked, or prepared another way.
Review four things before saving
- Food: did the estimate identify the main components correctly?
- Preparation: does it reflect sauces, oils, cooking method, and extras?
- Portion: do the quantities resemble what you actually ate?
- Values: where you have a product label, do the numbers match the appropriate serving?
If a value looks surprising, investigate the entry rather than accepting or rejecting it based only on the total. You can switch to manual entry when you have better information. Our nutrition-label guide can help with packaged foods.
Know the limits and the privacy choice
Calorify stores your diary locally on your device. Requesting AI analysis sends the selected photo and description to the service providers described in the app’s privacy policy. Local diary storage and optional online analysis are different parts of the experience.
Use nutrition estimates for general tracking, not to identify allergens, establish food safety, calculate medication doses, or make medical decisions. If precise dietary management is necessary, follow your healthcare professional’s guidance. You can also log meals manually whenever that better suits the situation.
