How we compared
We read the US App Store listing for each app and, where the listing was silent, the publisher’s own website. The table and the notes below repeat what those pages say. We did not run side-by-side tests, so this page does not rank the apps and does not say which one estimates calories best.
Calorify is our app. That is a reason to check the sources yourself, and we link every one of them.
Where Calorify is different
- No account. You open the app and start logging. There is no sign-up, email address, or password. More on how the private diary works.
- A diary that stays on your device. You can export a backup, restore it, or delete the diary from within the app.
- A “Data Not Collected” privacy label. Optional AI analysis still sends the photo and description you select for processing, as the app privacy policy explains.
- You review each estimate. An AI estimate shows the foods, portions, and values for you to check and correct before the entry is saved.
- A one-time purchase option. Pro is listed as a weekly subscription or a lifetime purchase. The App Store listing shows current options for your region.
- iPad and Mac. Calorify is listed for iPhone, iPad, Macs with Apple silicon, and Apple Vision Pro.
Where the other apps do more
- Android. Cal AI, Lifesum, and Formo are available on Android. Calorify is not.
- Barcode scanning. Cal AI and Lifesum scan barcodes on packaged food. Calorify’s listing does not include a barcode scanner.
- Apple Watch and Apple Health. Cal AI and Lifesum list Apple Watch support and connect to Apple Health.
- Meal plans and recipes. Lifesum’s listing includes meal plans, a recipe library, and voice logging.
- Moving between devices. Cal AI’s FAQ says your data returns when you sign in on another device. Calorify has no account to sign in to, so moving a diary means exporting a backup and restoring it.
- A longer track record. On the US App Store, Cal AI shows 4.8 stars from about 368,000 ratings, Lifesum 4.6 from about 151,000, and Formo 4.8 from 586. Calorify is a newer app with few ratings so far.
Calorify or Cal AI?
Both apps start from a photo of your meal. Cal AI also scans barcodes, runs on Android and Apple Watch, and keeps your data in the cloud behind an Apple or Google sign-in. Its listing says food scanning results require a subscription, and it requires iOS 18 or later. Its App Store privacy label lists identifiers and usage data under “Data Used to Track You.” TechCrunch reported in March 2026 that MyFitnessPal had acquired Cal AI and that it continues as a separate app.
Calorify asks for no account, keeps the diary on your device, runs on iOS 17.6 or later, and is also listed for iPad. If barcode scanning, Android, or Apple Watch matter most to you, Cal AI covers them and Calorify does not.
Calorify or Lifesum?
Lifesum is the broadest of the four. Its listing covers photo, voice, text, and barcode logging, plus meal plans, recipes, Apple Health, and Apple Watch. It is free to use “with limited features,” with Premium sold as a subscription. It uses a Lifesum account, and its privacy label lists identifiers under “Data Used to Track You” and health and fitness data under “Data Linked to You.”
Calorify is narrower: a food diary with calories, macros, water, weight, and AI-assisted logging, and no account. If you want diet plans and recipes inside the app, Lifesum offers them. If you want a simple diary that stays on your device, that is what Calorify is built for.
Calorify or Formo?
Formo is built around the photo. Its listing describes automatic calorie and macro tracking with “no weighing or manual food search,” says access to content requires an active subscription, and lists Android as well as iPhone. Its privacy label lists contact info, user content, identifiers, and usage data under “Data Linked to You.”
Calorify also logs from a photo, and adds two other routes: a typed description, or a manual entry with food search and portions you adjust yourself. That matters when you know more than the photo shows, such as a measured portion or a nutrition label.
What about accuracy?
We have not tested these apps against weighed meals, so we make no accuracy comparison. Cal AI’s FAQ describes the app as “about 80% accurate.” Calorify does not publish an accuracy percentage.
In any app, a photo estimate is a starting point. A camera cannot weigh food or see oil, sauces, and fillings. The AI food photo guide covers what to check before you save an entry, whichever app you use.
